A spokesperson from the State Fire and Rescue Service, Latvia said that they received a call and the caller said that a woman is trying to commit suicide. She was going to jump from the window of the fourth floor.
Jaunzems said that the reason he decided he wanted to be a firefighter was ‘he wanted to serve his country by saving the lives of other people.’ It has been five years since he started working as a firefighter.
They arrived at the scene and realized that the woman was about to jump at any moment. They prepared a trap, which would hold her when she will fall. Jaunzems was one of the two fighters who was waiting for her to jump; meanwhile, other rescuers were trying to access her from the roof of the building; that was when she jumped. Tomas didn’t fail to catch her.
Tomas said that never in his life had he trained to perform in such circumstances. It was the first time he did that. “Every single day of our life is unique, we just try to do our best and help people,” he added.
He was questioned whether he keeps track of the people he saves. He answered it with “We work as a team, so it is difficult to keep track of how many lives we save daily.” The events range from car crashes to fires, and in all the events people need help, and that is what they do.
Rihards Kozlovskis, Minister of Interior of Latvia, praised Tomas and said that their work is very special. They have to be courageous, professional and agile.
He also added that he was proud of the two firefighters who saved the life of that woman.
The Ministry of Internal and the service should reward both rescuers after an official assessment of the case.
