2 billion people on the Earth do not have access to clean drinking water despite 71% of it being covered with water.
The only solution to this problem seems to be turning seawater into drinking water. And a small town in Kenya near the Somalian border has done it. This new solar water treatment plant is developed by GivePower, the NGO.
This test has already enhanced the lives of people living in Kiunga, a small town in Kenya and the NGO seeking to reproduce it is other parts of the world. It has transformed saltwater from the Indian Ocean into clean drinking water.
Usually, a desalination plant needs a high amount of power and the process is expensive. However, with this innovation, solar energy is used.
The technology is known as solar water farms, and involves the installation of solar panels, which produce 50 kilowatts of energy.
This system is able to generate drinking water for approximately 35,000 people every day. GivePower says that the water generated is of better quality and does not leave any environmental pollution behind.
Before this initiative, people living in Kiunga had to travel for an hour to obtain water, which was full of parasites and pollutants resulting in diseases like E.coli and death.
Before this technology came to the Kiunga, its people only had salty and dirty water to drink, wash their belongings, and bathe. As a result, the kids have developed scars all over their body.
By 2025, almost half of the world’s population will face water scarcity since only 2.5% of the world’s water is freshwater.
The NGO has begun installing these solar panels in above 2,500 schools, business, and emergency services in seventeen countries, and is raising money to construct more solar water farms.
