The first transgender woman in the world to have a vagina made out of fish skin said she finally feels like a ‘real woman’.
The woman known as Maju underwent sex-reassignment surgery in 1999 but the botched operation caused her genitals to narrow and ‘collapse’.
Then, she went to another surgeon in Fortaleza, north-east Brazil, who creates vaginas for women born without genitals using the fish skin.
Now, she finally has a vagina made out of the skin of tilapia fish.
Professor Leonardo Bezerra, who led the operation carried out by surgeons at the Federal University of Ceará, said:
‘We were able to create a vagina of physiological length, both in thickness and by enlarging it, and the patient has recovered extremely well.’
‘She is walking around with ease, has no pain and is urinating normally. In a couple of months, we believe she will be able to have s**ual intercourse.’
Maju, who is thrilled to have a vagina, said: ‘I’m absolutely thrilled with the result. For the first time in my life, I feel complete and like a real woman.’
‘I was the fourth person in Brazil in 1999 to have, what was then, experimental surgery. But ten years ago I developed vaginal stenosis.’
‘The opening of my vagina started to get narrower and shorter and the canal collapsed.’
Maju was prevented from having s*x with her husband due to this.
After getting a divorce, Maju came to know about Professor Bezerra and decided to have surgery.
