Hawaiian Fishermen Catch and Donate 220 Pound Tuna For Local Healthcare Workers

Not many fishermen go out into the sea with their sole goal being to catch fish to feed and donate to the local community.

However, that was exactly what five fishermen in Hawaii set to do.

One of the five fishermen, Kyle Nakamoto, said that the group had the fortune of catching a giant yellowfin tuna that weighed in at 220 pounds (100 kilograms). Nakamoto is no stranger with the Hawaiian ocean as he is the producer of a local diving show called Hawaiian Skin Diver TV.

Although the catch will be a once in a lifetime dream for many anglers around the world, the group took the fish straight to a seafood distributor, rather than selling the tuna. If they had changed their mind, they could have sold the fish for thousands of dollars, if not more.

After cleaning, the distributor then went ahead to cook and prepare more than 300 poke bowls from the giant tuna. The meal was delivered to medical centers around the island where the staff have been fighting in the frontlines on the fight against the coronavirus.

One of the recipients of this pleasant surprise was the staff at Straub Medical Center. In an interview with CNN, one of their executives said that they have been extremely grateful for all the help and respect that the local community has given them since the outbreak of the pandemic.

He added that this dish was especially meaningful because he understands how much work was involved in catching the fish and preparing it as a fresh and healthy meal for 300 medical personnel around Hawaii.

Nakamoto and the other fishermen said that they have been inspired by a local community hero. Setsuo Todoroki, who just passed away last month at the age of 104, was famous for catching fish only to give it to people who were in need of help.

After expressing his sorrow at the passing of a great man, Nakamoto said that their donation was done in the memory of the late Todoroki. He said that he knew full well how valuable the tuna they caught was, and was that much more happy to share it with the local hospitals.
