Americans love celebrating Independence Day through fireworks, but our friends with furs may find the noises troubling.

This is why convicts at the Brevard County Jail in Florida have planned to spend their holiday in cuddling with shelter dogs, explained Sheriff Wayne Ivey in a Facebook post.

Ivey introduced his post by showing gratitude to the citizens who had volunteered in comforting the dogs at the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Animal Care Center on July 4th. He further explained that the dogs are most likely to get frightened and anxiety during the course of celebrations.

He continued that they greatly appreciate the proposal of assistance and love the fact that their community partners with them to help their homeless pets. However, he added, their agency had designed a new program that would help the dogs as well as add purpose to the lives of inmates sent to prison at the Brevard County Jail.

Ivey further explained that the convicts will be comforting the canines on Independence Day by feeding them treats, playing with them, and even reading to them.

The new program plans to not only aid the dogs in calming down on the occasion, but also to help build and implant a sense of compassion and purpose in the convicts that will hopefully help them as they move back into society once they have served their time.

It has been reported that 15 prisoners will be moved to the shelter on July 4.

Ivey explained that they will serve some sorbet to the dogs and that they have an ice-cream maker there in the jail – they use inmate labor and give them to the furry friends. He further added that this ice cream is healthy for them since it one uniquely for pets.
