Police officers in Florida started an investigation after a two-week-old baby was offered for sale for $500 on Craigslist.
Titled ‘Selling a baby -$500 (kendall fl)’, the ad reads: “Selling brand newborn baby for $500. Baby is 2weeks old. It sleeps, don’t make noise at night. Formula and clothes will give to you. Can give you the baby 4 year old sister for free.”
The seller went on to say that she or he lives in a ‘quiet influential neighborhood and works for the Florida Department of Children and Families.’
It concluded: “I don’t wanna be judged for not wanting these kids.”
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has started an investigation to determine whether the advertisement was real or a prank.
According to Miami Herald, which first reported on the case, said state agents have questioned a woman suspected of creating the ad but she maintained that she was not the culprit.
This is not the first time someone has tried to trade a child for money on Craigslist. In 2017, John Cain and Deanna Greer were arrested for putting up an ad selling their 5-month-old baby for $3,000.
One internet user wrote: “This may or may not be fake but babies and children are trafficked way more than many people want to know. And many of those who do it are names you know in positions of authority. It is also common among social service agencies.”
Another commented: “She doesn’t know the difference between affluent and influential? LOL This is totally fake.”
A third said: “I have a really dark joke that I’ll keep to myself as I don’t want to be banned.”
