Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a bill into law that will reportedly ban transgender athletes from taking part in female sports at various high schools and colleges in the state.
The news makes Florida the 8th as well as the largest state in the US to impose such harsh restrictions.
Moreover, local media outlets reported how the Republican Governor signed the respective bill during the early hours of Tuesday, and just in time for the first day of the month of Pride for the LGBT community.
The law will soon be implemented into various state high schools and colleges, barring trans females from taking part in any school teams that were originally intended for females.
Florida now joins the states of Alabama, Mississippi, West Virginia, Arkansas, Montana, and Tennessee as they all passed out similar laws while the governor of South Dakota signing an executive order too.
Now, critics explain how they are sure to face an array of court challenges as fury and pressure build-up from advocates fighting for their civil rights.
Meanwhile, supporters for the bans that are now coming forward mentioned how they intend on preserving fairness for all those biologically female players. On the other hand, the NCAA recently sent out threats that entailed removing tournaments from a number of states that followed the sports ban on trans athletes.
The move by Florida’s governor has recently plunged the state into a national culture war regarding the rights of transgender members of the community. However, the governor defended his decision by mentioning, “In Florida, girls will now play girls sports, and boys will play boys sports. We will make sure that it becomes a reality,” he added.
Also, the governor explained during the signing how he intends on going about based on the subject of biology, and that means not basing the decision upon ideology when it comes to sports in Florida.
