Brian Kilmeade, who is one of the hosts of “Fox and Friends,” drew fire for comments he made on Tuesday morning’s edition of the show when he compared severely overcrowded migrant detention facilities at the US-Mexico border with “a big party” that had invited too many guests.
His comments came as a response to Democratic lawmakers accusing Customs and Border Protection officials of serious mistreatment of detainees after lawmakers made an inspection near El Paso, Texas.
According to New York Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, migrant detainees don’t have access to clean water and were allegedly even being instructed to get their drinking water from toilet bowls.
Kilmeade countered the allegations by saying the CBP was being wrongfully blamed for what is happening and drew comparisons to a house party that went overboard.
He said:
“Picture yourself: you have a house, family of five. You have a party, you have 30 people over. Maybe you have a big party and have 100 people over and you have two and a half baths.
“In the beginning, it would be okay with 30. Then after 100 people, it would be a little bit taxed, maybe you get an outdoor facility. Can you picture 5,000?
“You can have the best facilities in the world but they are so overstocked…”
His comparison drew a response from Ocasio-Cortez who wrote on Twitter:
“Hey, @kilmeade:
What was the last “party” you went to where you:
– Were locked in a cage under armed guard
– Drank out of a toilet
– & given food of such poor nutritional value, for so long, that it gave you mouth sores?”
A Department of Homeland Security report appeared to corroborate the allegations of the Democratic lawmakers when it detailed the severe overcrowding that was occurring in migrant detention centers.
Accompanying pictures showed migrants packed like cattle in holding cells and areas and added that even children had no access to hot meals and showers.
However, Kilmeade stuck to his guns, replying to Ocasio-Cortez: “They aren’t cages- they r dividers that @BarackObama engineered 2 separate unaccompanied kids from adults ask @DHSgov- they were never meant to house 690k people in 6 mo’s- Border Patrol R patriots & u have done NOTHING to help, except rant about unverified stories.”
