44-year-old Paul Raynard and his 52-year-old best friend Michael Gwynne found 84 gold coins worth £100,000 dating back to the 1500s while they were on a short holiday.
The duo couldn’t believe their eyes when they found the rare gold coins.
The duo first found a horseshoe and a 50p coin when they started searching for the lost wedding ring in a field near Ballycastle, Northern Ireland.
However, after an hour-and-a-half, they found 84 gold coins dating back to the 1500s that could be worth at least £100,000.
Paul said they visited the place after coming from a business trip to find a friend’s wedding ring but they couldn’t find the ring. Instead, they found rare coins.
Paul said: “We didn’t find the ring and had only been there a couple of hours when we found the coins. I dug a small hole and there they were. I just could not believe it.”
“I jumped up and down and ran down the field in tears to find Michael. It’s something I have dreamed of finding since I was a kid. It was an amazing feeling. It’s like checking your lottery numbers and realising you’ve hit the jackpot.”
“I saw one or two coins at first but had no idea of the size of the hoard, to begin with. I went to fetch Michael who was across the field so we could share the moment together. I was shaking, I still can’t believe it now”, he added.
A team of experts is currently identifying and valuating the rare coins at the Ulster Museum.
