19-year-old Tang and her best friend have been hospitalized after challenging each other to do 1,000 squats in one go.
The two best friends carried out the challenge during a video call which lasted for around 3 hours. After a few days, both of them were rushed to hospital and diagnosed with a fatal condition caused by muscle injury, according to Chinese media.
Tang is a university student in Chongqing while her friend lives in Guangdong, according to Chongqing Evening News.
She said to the reporter that they were having a video call and they wanted to know which one of them had better stamina.
Tang said they took it in turns to perform squats to determine who could do 1,000. She admitted that she didn’t have the habit of working out but they both completed the challenge.
She said that she felt okay after the intense workout but on the third day, she was taken to hospital.
“I didn’t feel right as soon as I woke up. First of all, my legs felt achy and sore. What’s more? I couldn’t bend them,” Tang told the newspaper.
“Afterwards, I went to the toilet and saw my urine was as dark as tea,” she added.
Her boyfriend took her to a hospital where it was found she has a serious syndrome caused by muscle injury called rhabdomyolysis. She said her legs hurt so much she couldn’t even be carried by her boyfriend.
Rhabdomyolysis is a potentially fatal condition that happens when muscles are injured and they release their contents into the bloodstream.
Tang was treated at the ER before she was transferred to the Emergency Intensive Care Unit.
“The patient’s level of myoglobin (protein found in muscle cells) was so high it exceeded the highest reading on the medical device,” said doctor Li Ning.
The doctor said that a normal person’s reading of myoglobin should be 70 to 80 but Tang’s number was higher than 3,833.
Tang said her friend was also hospitalized and diagnosed with the same condition. They recovered after being hospitalized for more than a week.
