A fruit puzzle has been making rounds on the internet after leaving unsuspecting viewers baffled with its tricky answer.
The puzzle in question features a series of apples, bananas, and coconut halves represented by numbers. Your job is to solve the puzzle by finding out what number is hiding under the question mark in the picture.
Before we reveal the solution, look carefully at the picture of the fruits to see what the icons have in common (and what they don’t).
As our first hint, we would like to tell you that not all of the fruit icons in the picture are the same even though they may appear identical at first glance. Take into consideration the number of fruits seen in the icons when solving the final equation.
For your convenience, we have circled two fruit icons in the picture below. There’s something odd about them that influences the answer to the puzzle. Can you figure out what?
If you’re already sure you have the right answer, or if you need some help, feel free to scroll down for the breakdown of the puzzle.
Here’s how the puzzle works!
Let’s assume that A stands for apples, B for bananas, and C for coconuts.
LINE 1: Apple + Apple + Apple = 30, therefore 3A = 30 meaning that A = 10
LINE 2: A + B + B = 18, meaning that 10 + 2B = 18 and that 2B = 8. Therefore, B = 4
LINE 3: B – C = 2, meaning that 4 – C = 2. Therefore, C = 2
LINE 4: This is where the puzzle gets a bit tricky. If you take a close look at the line, you’ll see there’s only one coconut (rather than 2 like in the previous line) and three bananas (rather than 4 like in all other lines).
This means that rather than writing down ‘C + A + B = ?’ you should write down the equation like this: ½ C + A + ¾ B = ?
Now that you know that the coconut in the final line is only worth ONE and the three bananas are only worth THREE, getting the right answer should be no problem: 1 + 10 + 3 = 14. The correct answer is 14!
