A new Netflix’s Gabriel Fernandez Documentary tells the story of an eight-year-old boy’s murder and how his mom and boyfriend were labeled “nothing short of evil” by the judge who sentenced them for murdering the schoolboy.
The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez is a six-part series which shows his mother Pearl Fernandez gave him up to relatives soon after giving birth, Gabriel found security and love from his great-uncle Michael Lemos Carranza and his partner David Martinez.
“At one point he was with his uncle and his partner and during that period of time there’s no question he seems happy,” Brian Knappenberger, the director of new Netflix series The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez, told People.
“He seems like a young, curious kid. I think you see that in a lot of the pictures of Gabriel. If you look at him, it’s easy to understand the kind of warmth and potential he had.”
Gabriel was forcibly removed from his grandparents as Fernandez wanted her son back reportedly so she could claim welfare from him. On May 22, 2013, Gabriel was discovered at his mother’s Los Angeles home naked and with horrific injuries. He was rushed to hospital where he was declared brain dead and died two days later.
Doctors discovered that the boy’s skull had been fractured in two places, his three ribs were broken, his teeth were knocked out with a bat. Many more disturbing things were revealed which made people teary-eyed.
The Netflix documentary features various investigations done by social workers, where they reported the little boy’s wounds. The documentary made the viewers extremely upset as they took social media to show their outrage.
One said: “F*** these social workers. F*** that teacher. F*** all these people he told his story to & who blatantly f***ing ignored his outcries for help. HE SHOULD BE HERE. He should’ve been helped! Rest peacefully sweet boy. I’m so sorry everyone failed you.”
Another added: “The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez was heartbreaking. I cannot believe anyone on this planet would do what they did to that poor poor boy. It was a struggle to watch but I just had to see the parents who did all the abusing were sentenced accordingly. They way he looked, broke my heart.”
A third viewer wrote: “The Gabriel Fernandez Trials on Netflix makes me f***ing sick.”
