Emilia Clarke, also known as “Daenerys of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, The Unburnt, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Protector of the Realm, Lady Regent of the Seven Kingdoms, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons” in Game of Thrones, has spoken about her near-death experience that struck her in the real world.
According to the 32-year-old actress, she suffered not only one but two brain aneurysms that changed her perception of life for good.
As Clarke revealed, the problems first surfaced when she was at a gym in London back in 2011. Suddenly, she got a massive headache from where her condition rapidly declined.
“For a few moments, I tried to will away the pain and nausea. I said to myself, ‘I will not be paralyzed’” she revealed in The New Yorker.
“I moved my fingers and toes to make sure that was true. To keep my memory alive, I tried to recall, among other things, some lines from Game of Thrones.”
After being rushed to a hospital, a brain scan revealed that the star was suffering from a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), “a life-threatening type of stroke caused by bleeding into the space surrounding the brain.”
After undergoing necessary surgery, Clarke has woken up screaming in pain.
“I had no idea where I was. My field of vision was constructed. There was a tube down my throat and I was parched and nauseated,” she admitted.
When the doctors performed a check-up and asked Clarke for her name, all her mouth could produce was gibberish, leading the medics to diagnose the star with aphasia, an inability to speak.
“In my worst moments, I wanted to pull the plug. I asked the medical staff to let me die,” Clarke added. “My job-my entire dream of what my life would be-centered on language, on communication. Without that, I was lost.”
While the star managed to recover in time, she was forced to undergo another surgery after the doctors spotted an even larger growth on the other side of her brain. Since the surgery didn’t work in the first try, the doctors had to perform on her once again, this time in a more invasive manner than before.
Fortunately, the second procedure turned out to be a life-saver, allowing Clarke to function perfectly fine despite leaving her with a huge scar on her scalp and titanium-enhanced skull.
“After keeping quiet all these years, I’m telling you the truth in full. Please believe me: I know that I am hardly unique, hardly alone,” Clarke said.
“In the years since my second surgery, I have healed beyond my most unreasonable hopes. I am now at a hundred percent.”
