California city is set to ban gendered language like manhole, craftsmen and manmade in a bid to encourage inclusivity.
Berkeley City Council will replace gender-suggestive terms with gender-neutral language in the municipal code. Workers of the local government, female and male workers, will no longer use ‘he’ or ‘she’ but should use ‘them’ and ‘they.’
The legislation will see thousands of manhole covers changed into ‘maintenance holes.’ The term ‘craftsmen’ will no longer be accepted and people should use ‘craftspeople’ instead.
A memo for the move said: “In recent years, broadening societal awareness of transgender and gender-nonconforming identities has brought to light the importance of non-binary gender inclusivity.
“Therefore, it is both timely and necessary to make the environment of City Hall and the language of city legislation consistent with the principles of inclusion.”
Over two dozen of frequently used words will be changed once the measure is implemented. Such changes include the term ‘manmade’ being changed to ‘human-made,’ while ‘manpower’ will be changed to ‘human effort.’
Councilman Rigel Robinson, who sponsored the ordinance, said: “Gender-neutral language creates a lot of room to acknowledge that it’s not just men running the country.”
One internet user commented: “Blue statement..the whole world is laughing at Berkley. No wonder “collegiate Greek system residence” get real. Better to spend the money on fixing the brains of those who can’t cope with being a man or a woman.”
Another wrote: “Bauper.
.this is what happens when we don’t take an interst in the kind of people we vote into governing positions. The addle-brained genderists are good at getting into influencial positions and generally get their addle-brained views forced on people who are afraid of losing their jobs if they don’t go along with it.
”A third said: “Stop the world I want to get off!!! I am a woman and I can tell you now, I do not get offended by the word ‘manhole’ and any woman that does, needs to get a ruddy grip!!”
