A 9-year-old boy who is studying electrical engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology will become the world’s youngest person in history to receive a degree.
Laurent Simons is a bright young spark from Amsterdam, Netherlands, who boasts of 145 IQ. His intelligence level, along with his undying determination, allowed him to complete his college studies in a mere 9 months.
As he becomes an engineering graduate next month, he will take over the title of the world’s youngest graduate, replacing Michael Kearney who got his degree at the age of ten.
“Oxford and Cambridge are also in the major league and it would be very much more convenient for us,” Laurent’s father Alexander, a 37-year-old dentist, said in an interview with The Telegraph when speaking about the family’s plans for the future.
As for young Laurent, he has big plans for the future as well. As he expressed, he wants to become a heart surgeon or an astronaut.
According to the boy’s father, it was the grandparents who first noticed just how talented Laurent was as they were watching over him.
Speaking of the boy’s options was also Dean of Academics John Wilkes who taught the boy in summer classes.
“I taught him when he was six and we studied at the level of a 16-year-old. I really would recommend Oxford for him,” he said.
“He would develop somewhere the environment is about learning rather than being taught. For someone like Laurent that is ideal.”
With an IQ of 145, the boy has a photographic memory whereas he prefers science and math over other subjects. In his free time, he loves to hang out with friends and play video games such as Minecraft and Fortnite.
