The brother of George Floyd has urged fellow Americans to “stay woke” as the family marked the father’s upcoming death anniversary.
To mark the first death anniversary of George Floyd, who died on May 25 last year after former police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for several minutes, his family held rallies in New York City and Minneapolis.
As the Floyd family addressed the crowds on Sunday, hundreds of supporters gathered in Brooklyn and downtown Minneapolis.
Urging the Brooklyn crowd to “stay woke,” George Floyd’s brother, Terrence, said there was still a lot to do despite admitting that a lot has already changed in the last year.
“This is just the beginning. The change has started. A lot of negatives were turned into positives in this year, but we have a long way to go,” he insisted.
Meanwhile, George’s sister, Bridgett, addressed the people who gathered outside the Minneapolis courthouse where Derek Chauvin was found guilty of the murder and manslaughter of George Floyd.
“It has been a long year. It has been a painful year. It has been very frustrating for me and my family for our lives to change in the blink of an eye – I still don’t know why,” the sister said while people were heard chanting ‘Say his name!’ and ‘No justice, no peace!’
Attending the rally to listen to the speakers were reportedly also Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
Repeatedly showing support for the Floyds was also President Biden who is set to talk to the family on Tuesday. Previously, during Chauvin’s trial, Biden also called the family to voice his support for their cause and express his sympathy.
