A George Floyd statue was vandalized with silver paint for the second time just months after it was unveiled.
The incident takes place at Union Square in Manhattan, New York City, where the George Floyd monument which was unveiled on Juneteenth was vandalized by a male skateboarder.
According to the reports, the man defaced the statue dedicated to the man who died under the knee of police officer Derek Chauvin back in May 2020 by smearing silver paint over it.
In pictures taken after the act of vandalism, Floyd’s bust is seen covered in light-colored paint all the way from the forehead to the bottom part of the statue where the inscriptions are.
The incident allegedly took place at around 10 am on Sunday, whereas the police have yet to confirm what the motive for the attack on the statue was.
The same statue was previously defaced after it was unveiled in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, on Juneteenth. Since the first defacement, the statue was moved to the Union Square park in Manhattan and seated close to monuments dedicated to Breonna Taylor and Rep. John Lewis.
Taylor was a 26-year-old Black woman who was shot dead by the police during a raid in Louisville, Kentucky.
According to the reports, the statues of Lewis and Taylor were spared during the recent attack on Floyd’s bust, whereas the cops have yet to confirm whether the recent act of vandalism was inspired by racism.
