58-year-old Ghislaine Maxwell broke down in tears as she was denied bail and must stay locked up until her trial in July next year.
Jeffrey Epstein’s madam cried after learning her fate as she pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against her.
During the hearing at Manhattan’s Federal Court, the 58-year-old appeared via video from the Metropolitan Detention Center. She was in a small room that had a white bed, white walls, a door at the back and a window with frosted glass.
Maxwell’s proposal of a $5 million bond co-signed by her sisters and backed up by over $3.75 million in property has been denied by US District Judge Alison Nathan.
Her legal team had argued that she would be subject to GPS monitoring, give up all her travel documents, and be confined to a luxury hotel in New York.
However, Judge Nathan ruled that Maxwell was a significant flight risk, citing her ‘extraordinary financial resources’ and ‘substantial international’ ties.
Maxwell then broke down in tears when Judge Nathan started reading the decision, wiping her tears away as the judge said she was ‘sophisticated at hiding her financial resources.’
Prosecutors detailed how skilled she was ‘at living in hiding’ as two victims said she was a flight risk. One wrote: “Without Ghislaine, Jeffrey couldn’t have done what he did. She is a predator and a monster.”
Maxwell is accused of grooming young girls for Jeffrey Epstein to abuse from 1994 to 1997. If found guilty, she faces up to 35 years behind bars.
She’s now in custody in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn where she is wearing paper clothes to make sure she does not commit suicide.
