When a mother took her daughter with autism to see their neighbor’s Christmas decorations, she had no idea the holiday lights would have such an amazing effect on her.

Kaitlyn De Jesus was only 3 years old when she was diagnosed with autism. Since then, she hasn’t spoken over two words, her mom Marisabel Figueroa said to Today.

But it all changed when Figueroa decided to take Kaitlyn to the driveway of their neighbor to see their Christmas light display.

“She got up from the chair and started singing,” Figueroa expressed. “She said, ‘Mom! Look at the blue lights. Look at the snowmen. Santa’s coming!’ I started crying. I couldn’t believe it.”

The heartwarming moment was something the loving mother had waited ten years to witness after finding out that her daughter has autism.

Figueroa told Today: “The neurologist who saw Kaitlyn said she was going to be non-verbal for all of her life. I refused to accept that.”

Kaitlyn remained nonverbal and would only speak with visual prompts.

“Our usual routine is to go after 6 when it gets dark,” Figueroa told Today. “Mr. Weaver puts down a special chair just for Kaitlyn and she sits there dancing and tapping her feet.”

But this particular night, Figueroa, Weaver and their other neighbors were in for a Christmas miracle when the teens started to verbally express her happiness over the Christmas lights.

“It was the first time she ever talked,” Weaver said to Today.

Figueroa said: “This woman came over to me and goes, ‘I’ve never heard Kaitlyn speak.’ I was like, ‘Well, I’m her mom and I’ve never heard her speak unprompted like that.’”

She added: “I’m still crying about it.”
