A five-year-old girl from Detroit is the youngest person and the first child to die of coronavirus in the state.
Skylar Herbert, who was the daughter of first responders, showed coronavirus symptoms and rushed to a hospital by her parents.
Her mother LaVondria Herbert works as a police officer in Detroit while her father Ebbie is a Detroit firefighter.
After she was admitted to the hospital, she was tested positive for coronavirus.
Meanwhile, Skylar also developed meningoencephalitis, a rare form of meningitis and she was put on a ventilator after her health deteriorated.
LaVondria told The Detroit News: “Out of nowhere, Skylar began complaining about her head hurting again and then she just threw up.”
She spent three weeks in the hospital before dying on March 29 after her parents decided to take her off the ventilator.
Her mother LaVondria told that her condition was getting worse day by day and they were told her health was not improving.
The doctors declared her brain dead and told the parents she would not survive.
The parents were then forced to take the most difficult decision of their lives and they decided to take off the ventilator.
LaVondria said: “We decided to take her off the ventilator today because her improvement had stopped, the doctors told us that it was possible she was brain dead, and we basically just knew she wasn’t coming back to us.”
Describing her daughter, LaVondria said her little daughter was so loving as she would tell her she loved her 20 times a day.
A spokesman for Beaumont Health described the death of the girl as ‘tragic’ and told PEOPLE that they are heartbroken that COVID-19 has taken the life of a young child.
2,391 people have died of coronavirus in Michigan so far and Skylar was the youngest person and the first child to die of coronavirus in the state.
