A one-year-old girl tragically passed away after a drunk driver ran over her while she was playing in her mom’s driveway.
Little Vivian ‘Vivi’ Staples was playing in the driveway at her home in Shingobee Township, Minnesota, when 28-year-old Anthony J. Goose, the girl’s uncle, paid a visit to the family.
According to the Star Tribune, the one-year-old’s mom, Vanessa Goose, said the child was playing with her uncle before Anthony decided to leave.
While going in reverse with his truck, the uncle, who was drunk at the time, struck his niece before fleeing the scene. “The way he pulled out was careless,” Vanessa said.
After the police arrived at the family home, Anthony was nowhere to be seen. Though the paramedics did their best to save the toddler’s life, Vivian succumbed to her injuries while on the way to a medical helicopter.
Meanwhile, her uncle returned to the house only to act as if he didn’t know what had happened, Vanessa told the Star Tribune.
Anthony J. Goose was then arrested and charged with vehicular homicide. As the sheriff’s office confirmed, his blood alcohol level was above the legal limit for driving at the time of the incident.
It has since also come to light that Goose had his driving license revoked and was on probation for reckless driving at the time of the accident. Previously, in December, the 28-year-old was also arrested over a drunk driving incident.
