A 5-year-old girl has gone viral after selling drinks and cookies outside her home in order to pay off lunch debts for her 123 classmates.
Little Katelynn Hardee from Vista, California, has touched the hearts of people after she started selling cider, hot chocolate, and cookies in front of her parents’ house in an attempt to pay off lunch debts of students at Breeze Hill Elementary School.
The generous, hardworking girl soon attracted plenty of buyers and managed to raise enough money to pay off debts of 123 pupils.
“She started asking me a lot of questions and I just tried to explain to her that sometimes people aren’t as fortunate and that we need to try to be kind and give when we can,” the girl’s proud mother, Karina Hardee, said in an interview with CNN.
“It’s all about kindness. Especially this holiday season, and with everything that’s going on in the world, we just need a little bit more kindness out there.”
While schools in California continue to provide lunches to students who owe money to the school, the school district is forced to pay off the debts at the end of the year under the new law, meaning that they have fewer funds available for other projects and programs.
On top of selling foods and drinks, Katelynn has also launched a fundraiser to collect extra cash intended to clear the students’ debts.
As the young girl added, her goal is to raise $6,300.
