A 2-year-old girl has developed severe eye condition after playing on a smartphone daily for a year.
The girl’s parents gave her the device when she was only one year old to keep her quiet. Unfortunately, the smartphone caused her to develop severe short-sightedness.
When her parents took her for an eye checkup after growing concerns over their daughter’s frequent frowning and squinting, they discovered she has severe myopia.
The little girl now needs glasses with a power of –9 dioptres. For comparison, someone with mild nearsightedness has a score of -0.5D to -3D.
Dr. Liu Li said the girl’s condition was irreversible and it could get worse as she grows older, according to Daily Economic News.
The doctor also said that the girl should not have been exposed to screens but she already had too much screen time.
The World Health Organization released a new set of guidelines in April, saying infants under the age of one should not be exposed to electronic screens. Children between the ages of 2 and 4 shouldn’t have more than one hour of “sedentary screen time” every day.
Eliminating or limiting screen time for children will make them healthier when they grow up, said the organization.
According to a recent study, almost 70 percent of children in China have their own smartphones. Almost half of them are also given access to the internet.
Excessive screen time is often blamed for the growing rates of myopia or near-sightedness. A national vision report revealed around 500 million people in China suffer visual impairment while more than 400 million have myopia. The rates continue to increase.
