A 9-year-old girl has died in her sleep after having a bad headache and vomiting, leaving her family heartbroken and devastated.
Makenzie Gongora was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center after staff at an after-school program took the fourth-grader’s temperature and found that she had a fever.
The young girl tested positive for coronavirus and her mother Kristle was told to take Makenzie home to “monitor her fever” and “make her comfortable.”
“Kenzie did not have any respiratory issues,” her aunt, Victoria Southworth, told TODAY. “There was nothing major going on. All the symptoms were mild.”
Makenzie’s aunts created a GoFundMe page and wrote that the 9-year-old girl “seemed to be recuperating over the weekend with waves of symptoms coming and going.”
However, she started to feel exhausted and went to sleep early on February 1.
“My sister-in-law later checked on her at night and realized that she was no longer breathing and could not find a pulse,” aunt Erica Gongora said.
Sadly, Makenzie died in her sleep – on her dad’s birthday, and only three days before her mom’s birthday.
Southworth further said: “She was small, petite, kind of like a little pixie fairy, but very protective and sweet and loving and just very affectionate. Wanted to be everybody’s friend. Leaves a huge hole in our hearts, that’s for sure.”
The heartbroken family hasn’t yet received confirmation that the young girl passed away from coronavirus but Southworth said that they believe her death was caused by Covid-19.
“We’re waiting for the medical examiner report; but our family suspects it, though, because we don’t know of anything else that could have caused this,” she told the San Antonio Express News.
“COVID knows no age limit – my niece was 9, hadn’t even hit double digits yet. COVID IS AWFUL.”
