12-year-old Emma was left fighting for her life after testing positive for coronavirus.
She is receiving treatment in a hospital in Atlanta after being diagnosed with pneumonia.
Her cousin, Justin Anthony, said to CNN that his family had no clue how the healthy girl contracted the virus. She did not travel recently to any other country and has no pre-existing conditions.
Emma was put on a ventilator at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta-Scottish Rite Hospital.
It was confirmed by the hospital that a patient tested positive for coronavirus. “The patient remains in isolation, and we have consistently used appropriate precautions,” said a spokesperson for the hospital.
“Additional details will not be released due to patient privacy laws.”
Justin also told CNN that his cousin’s mother allowed him to her story so that other people can receive their message.
“I know first hand how dangerous it is,” he said.
Justin also expressed his frustration at people’s claims that coronavirus does not impact the health of young people.
“Here’s a 12-year-old fighting for her life,” he said. “People need to practice social distancing. People need to take care of their children.”
Health experts have said that people with underlying health conditions and the older generation are at the greater risk of dying from covid-19.
The younger generation account for the smallest percentage of known cases and young adults have better results that older ones.
While children can get and spread the infection, it is believed they develop a mild case of coronavirus.
But a recent US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report shows younger people are already making up a huge percentage of infections.
