A teen has shared her devastation after losing her boyfriend to cancer only four weeks after a diagnosis that gave him only six months to live.
18-year-old Lucas Issa had been struggling with different forms of cancer. But one month before his 19th birthday, he passed away in hospital surrounded by his girlfriend and family.
Devastated Zoe Meadowcroft said: “I didn’t believe we would only have days left together when we were supposed to have months. We were supposed to grow old together.”
Lucas was given up to 6 months to live only four weeks before he passed away after a tumor was found on his spine and more scattered around his body.
“Lucas fought the toughest and longest battle with cancer, and never did I think I’d be here writing this today, none of us did,” she expressed.
“We were so happy together, everyone that knows us knows there wasn’t a minute we were apart. We were so in love and nothing was ever going to take that away from us.”
The 18-year-old was initially diagnosed with cancer in his leg. After surgeries to remove the tumor, his doctors resorted to amputation, which took his leg from his hip.
Unfortunately, cancer had come back in his lungs and surgeons removed the spot, taking 20 percent of his lungs.
He was declared cancer-free after the operation.
Meadowcroft said when he started to learn how to walk again using his prosthetic leg: “I had never had more of a proud girlfriend moment in my life.
“I went to every appointment with him from the first time he tried it on, to the last one where he was walking on the crutches off the bars with it.
“I shed a tear almost every single time… I knew everything he had been through was all worth it.”
But two months later, Lucas started complaining of chest pains. “Little did I know that was the last time we would ever have a drive together, the last time I would ever get to sleep beside him.
“Our lives changed.”
Doctors found a large tumor on his spine and eight more tumors throughout his body. The tumor became so big that it paralyzed him.
Meadowcroft said her last days with him went by very quick.
“At 6.30am you kissed me and told me you loved me. At 7.30am I woke up and noticed your chest wasn’t moving. I know it was you that woke me up,” she expressed.
“I held your lifeless body for nine hours until they took you away yesterday afternoon. You fought like hell but I knew you were tired, I knew it was time for you to be in a better place.”
