The Goldbergs Star And Oscar Nominee George Segal Dies From ‘Complications’ During Surgery

The popular TV star and Oscar nominee George Segal has passed away, his wife reported.

Segal was well-known for his long and successful acting career during which he added 126 credits to his name according to IMDb.

The beloved actor, who starred in comedies as well as dramas, was not only nominated for Oscar but also managed to win two Golden Globes for his roles in A Touch of Class and The New Interns.

Through the decades, Segal appeared in a series of popular TV shows and movies including Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Goldbergs, Just Shoot Me!, Retired at 35, The Naked Truth, King Rat, Ship of Fools, A Touch of Class, and many more.

“The family is devastated to announce that this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery,” the 87-year-old actor’s wife, Sonia Segal, told Deadline and Variety.

Throughout the decades, Segal excelled at bringing out the funny side of the characters he played, whereas producer Steve Levitan previously noted that the actor “could make characters who should have been jerks seem lovable” in an interview with Variety.

As for Segal, he showed no signs of slowing down despite being well into his 80s. The actor previously spoke to Variety to reveal he wasn’t going to retire because he keeps on getting interesting role offers.

“Being in your 70s is OK but, when you get to your 80s, you get creaky. I’ve got my second wind – although I’m not going as fast as I used to,” he told the publication.

Following the TV icon’s unfortunate passing, fans and entertainment industry figures have started paying their respects to Segal.

“Today we lost a legend. It was a true honor being a small part of George Segal’s amazing legacy. By pure fate, I ended up casting the perfect person to play Pops. Just like my grandfather, George was a kid at heart with a magical spark,” The Goldbergs director, Adam F. Goldberg, wrote.

“So sorry to hear of the passing of the wonderful George Segal! We did The Zany Adventures of Robin Hood together & I guested on Just Shoot Me. One of a kind and always a joy!” actress Morgan Fairchild added.

Meanwhile, Segal’s manager Abe Hoch dubbed the actor a “wonderful human” as he said he would miss his “warmth, humor, camaraderie and friendship.”
