The government will vote on new rules that are expected to pass parliament.
Danish politicians plan to strip jihadists’ children who were born abroad of their Danish citizenship under new laws.
The minority government revealed the policy after reaching a deal with the populist Danish People’s Party.
It is unclear how the new law will be worded but activists claim it will increase ‘complex’ legal issues around children’s rights and statelessness.
The news came after Britain stripped Shamima Begum, an ISIS bride, of her citizenship. Home Secretary Sajid Javid said the move was legal as the woman has dual Bangladeshi citizenship even though she has never been to the country.
Begum also had a child who would’ve been a British citizen by law. However, the baby passed away.
Countries are not allowed to strip citizens of their citizenship if it would leave them stateless or without a home country, under international law.
The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which Britain and Denmark are signatories, states that “the best interests of the child shall be a primary consideration” in any decision involving children.
UNICEF Denmark said the new law would punish children for their parents’ sins and it would be illegal.
The courts have convicted 13 people for trying to join or have joined a terrorist organization. 9 of those were stripped of their Danish nationality but the rest remained in the country as they didn’t hold dual citizenship.
“Contrary to current rules, children who will be born in regions prohibited to Danes… will not automatically receive Danish nationality,” said the immigration ministry in a statement.
Immigration Minister Inger Stojberg said in the statement: “As their parents have turned their back on Denmark, there is no reason for the children to become Danish citizens.”
