UK Government to Provide Free Devices to Homes With Low-Income So That Students Can Study Online Amidst the Lockdown


The UK government will provide low-income families with 4G routers to make sure pupils have internet access if they do not have broadband or mobile internet.

This move is an attempt to ensure that remote education is accessible to all children alike while schools are shut down due to coronavirus.

The department for education said that the devices would be provided for students who are at the most critical stages of their studies.

Students who do not already have a device or are care leavers or social workers are the ones who are eligible for these devices.

Additionally, pupils who are disadvantaged and preparing for exams in the following year are also eligible for devices.

Some schools will be directly applying to the DfE for the procurement of the devices. As of now, the DfE has not revealed when it will launch the emergency measure but assured that the devices would be available soon.

Education institutions will be able to keep the devices once they re-open. Moreover, the government has also initiated a national online classroom where students can easily participate in online lessons from leading teachers of the country.

The online classes have been launched, and the lessons have been created by approximately 40 primary as well as secondary school teachers for students up to 15 years. The lessons will be focused on maths, languages, and arts.

Gavin Williamson, the education secretary, said that Britain had set no date for re-opening the schools. And, he apologized to students for the interruption caused to the studies. Gavin also revealed that the country has no plans of re-opening schools over the summer holidays.

The Save the Children’s head of child poverty, Becca Lyon said that offering devices to students would be a great support to continue their education, especially those who lack the right resources.

This will greatly reduce the attainment gap within the students and allow everyone to access learning alike.
