87-year-old Ewart Lockton from Manchester was discharged from a hospital after fighting covid-19 for two weeks.
Mr. Lockton fought the infection in North Manchester Hospital and after successfully beating it, he bid an emotional goodbye to NHS staff.
Sophie Edwards, his granddaughter, shared the heartwarming news on Facebook where it quickly went viral.
“We all need to hear some positive stories…” Sophie said. “This is my 87-year-old grandpa saying goodbye to staff at North Manchester Hospital where he’s been for two weeks with covid positive pneumonia.”
She added: “He’s now finishing his recovery where he belongs, at home with my grandma! Thank you to everyone for all their kindness and support through a difficult time and most of all…..thanks to the NHS!!”
Her Facebook post gained thousands of shares and comments, with one person saying: “What a man, what a medical team, good luck to you all.”
This comes as The Sun reported around half a million Brits responded to calls to support the most vulnerable in the UK during the outbreak.
Health chiefs were ‘blown away’ as people signed up to the NHS at a rate of 5 per second. The number of volunteers reached more than 500,000, NHS England said.
Volunteer responders will be tasked with shopping to 1.5 million patients isolating from virus and delivering vital medicines.
Health officials initially planned to recruit 250,000 volunteers but after hitting their target in only 12 hours, they now want 750,000 to join the new NHS volunteer responders force.
PM Boris John also offered a ‘special thank you’ and said the volunteers ‘will be absolutely crucial in the fight against this virus.’
