An 80-year-old grandfather who is obsessed with exercising has gone viral after his obsession with CrossFit came to light.
Despite his age, Jacinto Bonilla from New York doesn’t plan on stopping any time soon. On the contrary, the senior celebrated his 80th birthday with a special session of CrossFit which consisted of 80 rope jumps, 80 squats, 80 pull-ups and push-ups, 80 kettlebell swings, 80 wall ball shots, and 80 deadlifts.
For the cherry on top of the pie, the senior added another set of 80 rope jumps at the end of the excruciating exercise.
“It’s very important to me what other people think of older people – in their eighties or seventies,” the man who was dubbed the grandfather of CrossFit said in an interview with Barcroft TV.
“We can be strong, mobile and we don’t have to depend on anyone to help us. That’s why I work out so hard, I visualize myself not needing anybody’s help.”
As Jacinto revealed, his passion for CrossFit arose in 2006 when he was 69 years old. After seeing an article about the high-intensity workout, the senior talked to a bunch of young men whom he spotted working out and asked if he could join.
“They were doing exercises one after another, they were doing pull-ups, push-ups and squats,” Jacinto recalled.
“I said to them, ‘wow, I’ve been looking for something like this. Can I join in?’ They looked at me and said, ‘can you do pull-ups?’ I said, ‘Of course I can do pull-ups!’”
From that moment on, Jacinto was only getting stronger by the day. While prostate cancer in 2008 slowed down his progress, the man pursued his passion after he recovered from the disease.
“I had to stop because I had to recover, I remember the doctor told me when I went back to CrossFit, I would have to take it easy,” Jacinto added.
“I just had to wait to heal so I could get back into exercising. I just like exercising and being able to move, at the time I couldn’t wait to get back and exercise again. Before I knew it, I was back into doing the things I was used to doing.”
Praising the CrossFit master’s achievements and his tough workout plan for his 80th birthday, Robert Jackson, who is decades Jacinto’s junior, said:
“It was very challenging but amazing at the same time. You’re doing a workout next to somebody who is an inspiration to so many in the CrossFit community.
“It’s a pleasure to do it alongside with him. When I first started working out, he pushed me in so many ways.”
