A grandma has gone viral after sharing a picture comparing the amount of food she can buy for the same price a large pack of cigarettes costs.
As Tasmania-based Judy Kerrison explained, she came upon the idea to make a comparison in order to teach her grandkids a lesson.
According to the elderly woman, she was able to purchase two weeks’ worth of food for two people for the same price one pack of 40 cigs costs.
As seen in her picture, on the left side there is a pack of cigarettes that cost $56.95, whereas on the right side there are bananas, milk, bread, pasta, vegetables and fruits, sausages, meat, chips, and cereal totaling to $56.85.
“The grandkids and I tried to purchase the most value for money ‘basic’ food items and the most popular cigarette brand. They were surprised at the amount of food you can buy for the same monetary value,” Kerrison said.
As she explained, she took on the challenge after one of her grandkids pointed out how expensive cigarettes are.
“I hope this exercise has made [my grandkids] aware of life’s choices,” she expressed.
According to Kerrison, the groceries they bought with the money that would get her another pack of cigs kept two people fed for two weeks.
As she added, she wanted smokers to realize how much money is getting burned rather than being used for other purposes.
