A grandma elephant has been reunited with her daughter after being separated from her family for twelve long years.
The heartwarming reunion took place at Bergzoo Halle in Germany where 39-year-old Pori got to see her daughter, 19-year-old Tana, after the two had been separated for 12 years.
Not only was the grandmother elephant reunited with her offspring but she also got to see Tana’s daughters Elani, 1, and Tamika, 4.
According to the reports, Pori the African elephant was born in Zimbabwe back in 1981. After being brought to Germany, the elephant lived at Magdeburg Zoo for more than a decade.
Following years after Pori was transferred to Tierpark Berlin, the elephant gave birth to Tana. Years later, however, the mother and daughter were separated as Tana got relocated.
Speaking of the heartwarming reunion during which the elephants were touching each other with their trunks, Dr. Dennis Muller of Bergzoo Halle said:
“Pori’s arrival in Halle is an important step in modern elephant husbandry. In the future, all elephant herds in European zoos should be cared for in such natural family structures. Today we have come a great deal closer to this goal.”
According to the reports, Pori currently remains in a separate enclosure but will have the chance to get accustomed to Tana and her granddaughters in the following days.
While young bulls in the wild typically leave their herds in order to mate, female elephants tend to remain by their mothers’ side for the rest of their lives.
