A 97-year-old woman, who couldn’t attend her prom, was named ‘Honorary Prom Queen’ at Pilgrim High School.
Helen Danis of West Warwick, Rhode Island, said she couldn’t attend her prom as she didn’t fit in.
“I couldn’t keep up with the kids. I didn’t really fit in. We were in the middle of a depression and money was scarce”, Danis told Turn to 10 News.
Her granddaughter, Julie Huddon, who knew her grandmother felt bad for not attending her own prom, decided to surprise her.
“Grammie couldn’t afford to go to the prom when she was younger, she felt bad that she couldn’t keep up with the other kids. She didn’t say it was embarrassment, but I believe deep down it was.”
“I love going to her house to listen to her old stories, and not going to prom came up a few times”, Huddon told Liftable.
“We’ve been doing a lot of things that she has said she wanted to do.point 295 |

Huddon wanted her grandma to attend prom as she couldn’t attend her own prom so, she went to her son’s school.
She met the principal at Pilgrim High School to take permission to attend the school’s senior prom.
Huddon then asked her grandma to be her date as she gave her a paper heart that reads: ‘Grannie, will you be my prom queen & go to Senior prom with me?’
“As soon as I gave it to her, she loved it,” Huddon said.
Danis wore a lavender gown and tiara to attend the school’s Senior Prom which was held at the Rhodes on the Pawtuxet.
Danis even danced with the Principal and said the principal “Was a gentleman and danced her across the dance floor to her table.”
Danis was named “Honorary Prom Queen” at the senior prom and she absolutely loved it.
She said: “She had a great time with all the kids and it was a night to remember.”
