A senior woman jumped to her death after her pension got frozen and she was left with an empty bank account.
81-year-old Joy Worrall from Wales plunged to her end from a quarry after being left with $5 and no hope of being able to manage things on her own any longer.
As the elderly woman’s family explained, Joy had always been very proud and independent which is why she chose to kill herself rather than ask those close to her for help after her pension got frozen by mistake.
According to the family, Joy has always threatened to jump from the quarry if ever she ran into major financial or health problems.
When Joy’s pension was cut off, the 81-year-old resorted to her savings to buy food and pay for the bills. After she ran out of her reserves, however, Joy decided to end her life.
Following the senior’s tragic death, her son revealed that the Department of Work and Pensions were found “guilty of a failure of duty of care” and admitted there was an error.
In a statement, Ben Worrall, Joy’s son, said that his mother was in great shape and fit. He also explained that the 81-year-old had been getting pension credits on top of a state pension.
In July 2017, however, the situation was reassessed and the DWP froze not only her credits but the entire pension, leaving the woman without any source of income.
In an explanation letter to the family, Suzanne Mitchelson of the DWP confirmed that Joy’s two pensions shouldn’t be frozen together and that her state pension should continue.
“I am sorry to say that due to an administrative error this did not happen,” she admitted.
After the incident went viral, Ben spoke out and said his “mother was a proud woman who was simply left without any capital.”
“I feel we have been let down by the DWP who have failed in their duty of care. It’s a disgrace how this can happen in modern society and what concerns me is that this could happen to someone else,” the grieving son added.
