An 84-year-old great grandmother said she ‘doesn’t want to live anymore’ after a stranger attacked her when she came back home from purchasing some flowers.
Patricia was bashed as soon as she entered her bedroom at a retirement village in North Turramurra in Sydney. She had just come back after buying fruits and flowers to brighten up her flat.
Her daughter, Caroline, said during a press conference: “I feel so sad that my mum, who is 84, who’s just lost her husband, is now in a position where she just doesn’t want to be in this world anymore because she just feels so unsafe.”
Caroline added: “As you can imagine, this has been a very, very shocking and distressing event in our family.
“This should never ever happen to the most vulnerable of vulnerable in our community.”
She said her mother is shocked that it happened to her. Patricia now has to grieve the loss of her security, safety and independence.
Police officers described the incident as ‘appalling and cowardly.’
Patricia had only been living in the village for 6 weeks. Caroline described her as a ‘very eloquent and wonderful human being’ who loved being with her family.
The great-grandmother was rushed to Sydney Adventist Hospital in Wahroonga where she is being treated for injuries to her arm, chest, and face.
Detective Chief Inspector Luke Spurr said that the elderly woman and her relatives were shocked. “This is an absolutely appalling and cowardly act and let me reassure you these type of offences are uncommon and that police are doing everything in their power to fully investigate this matter and to locate the offender,” he told reporters.
Chris Griffith, a local resident, said he was also shocked by the incident. He told 7News: “This is a very quiet village, one of the benefits of the place is that it’s very secure, it is a concern for everyone.”
