These two target employees save an elderly couple from falling prey to ‘Grandparent scammers.
’ When the grandparents entered Target and asked for a gift card worth $4,000 in total, the cashiers asked one question that saved them from a heartless modus.
It was on Jan. 26 when a couple from Virginia received a terrifying phone call from an unknown number. The caller told them that he is a police officer and they had arrested their grandson.
According to Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, the caller told the grandparents that “if they wished to get their grandson out of jail, they would need to purchase two Target gift cards of $2,000.00 apiece.”
Because they were concerned about their dear grandson, the couple immediately visited the local Target to get the cards. They picked up two gift cards and went to the register to pay for them.
The elderly couple asked the cashier, Matthew Drye, to put $2,000 on each gift card. After hearing that, Drye’s curiosity prevailed, and he asked them why they needed two gift cards with that large amounts of money.
After the grandparents explained about the phone call, Drye and another cashier, Mariah Thomas, suspected that the elderly couple might have fallen prey to a ‘grandparent scam.’
According to CBS News, the Target employees’ suspicions turned out to be well founded as they soon discovered that the couple’s grandson was not locked up and was safe at home.
Sheriff David R. Hines awarded Drye and Thomas with “Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Challenge Coins” for saving the couple from a scam.
“This simple act of kindness made the couple question their decision and they too recognized they had fallen victim to a heartless scam,” Hanover County Sheriff’s Office said.
“As law enforcement officers, we can’t be in all places at all times,” Hines said. “It warms my heart to see our citizens go above and beyond to help each other, which in turn acts as another set of eyes and ears for the Sheriff’s Office.
“Mr. Drye and Ms. Thomas prove, once again, why Hanover County is such a great place to live, work, and raise a family.”
