As Dr.
Andy Mathis was closing his veterinarian office for the night, the phone rang. On the phone was a woman, who told Dr. Mathis about a starving dog she found on the side of a dirt road. Dr. Mathis knew this case needed urgent care and told the woman to bring the starving dog in so could check her out and make sure she was healthy.
Nothing could prepare Dr.
Andy Mathis for the scene of the dog that showed up that night, however.
The woman arrived at Granite Hills Animal Care in Elberton, Georgia with the dog in the back. Dr. Andy Mathis could hardly believe the horrific condition the dog was in. The dog was hypothermic, anemic, emaciated and was even suffering from a severe vaginal prolapse. The scene was grim and the chances of her survival were slim.
Dr. Mathis was debating what he should do when he decided to turn to the public on Facebook, with a question. So I had two choices, I can put her to sleep. Or try to save her.

When Dr. Mathis reached out to the “universe”, or more accurately Facebook, animal lovers were quick to give him an answer: try to save her.
Users on Facebook even gave this poor little dog a name.
As one user put it “We hate the thought that any pet gets sent to rainbow bridge or passes away without a name. ” Thus the name Gracie Clair was born, Graycie being spelled with a Y due to her gray fur coat.If there is one thing that animal lovers hate, it’s a poor abused dog being forgotten.
Dr. Mathis worked overtime to make sure poor little Graycie would get a live she deserved and the horrible abuse to just be a painful memory for her. As Dr. Mathis refused to give up on Graycie, Graycie herself refused to give on life and through a miracle, she was finally able to begin her recovery.

Every day Graycie showed important improvements. However there was one problem: Graycie was refusing to eat. Dr. Mathis then did something truly incredible. He wanted to prove to Graycie that she was safe and earn her trust. In the video below you will see one dedicated veterinarian give Graycie the confidence she needed to start eating again. He sits in the cage with her and eats his lunch from a dog bowl, just like Graycie.
With Dr. Mathis unconventional help, Graycie’s road to recovery began to speed up as she gained weight and began to eat better. Soon she began returning to her normal self from before the horrific abuse she went through.
Graycie still needs more time and special attention before she can finally go home with a forever family.
However Dr.
Mathis is surely the best person for the job and is dedicated to seeing her full recovery. We hope that poor little Graycie is able to find a forever home that will treat her right. She’s a little adorable little warrior![rsnippet id=”6″ name=”DFP/34009881/Article_3″]
