A tiny puppy born to a German Shepherd was named Hulk thanks to his bright green color and ‘angry’ expression after his birth.
The adorable puppy with unusual color was born in Canton, North Carolina, whereas the pup’s human family was shocked after spotting bright green fur on one of the dogs in the litter.
As owner Shana Stamey explained, the family’s dog, Gypsy, gave birth to eight adorable puppies. One of them, however, was very different from the rest.
Unlike his brothers and sisters, Hulk, who was the fourth one to arrive in the world, was bright green, almost yellow.
“Then I realized the puppy was moving, and he was lime green,” Stamey explained in an interview with WLOS.
“He was super mad. So, yeah, he became Hulk. We thought about Gremlin, yeah, Pistachio. We call him Mr. Green sometimes.”
As veterinarian technician Suzanne Cianciulli confirmed after Hulk’s story went viral, the pup’s unique color originated in his mum’s sack.
“The sack that they’re in when they’re in their mom, there can be meconium in there and that tends to stain them,” the veterinarian of Junaluska Animal Hospital explained.
Meconium is the stool of an infant mammal that can temporarily color the fur, especially if it is white.
In addition to meconium, puppies can become green due to Biliverdin, a green tetrapyrrolic bile pigment that can be found in dogs’ placentas.
While the pup may look out of this world, the green stain will disappear in a matter of weeks.
“Mom licks it away until I bathe it and then, I guess after a couple of weeks, it will finally like fade out,” Stamey added.
