A grieving son was surprised to receive a bittersweet birthday gift from his loving mum ten days after she tragically passed away due to cancer.
Kevin Doonan was just about to mark his 30th birthday when his mother, Carol, passed away due to an aggressive form of stomach cancer.
“Recently, I just lost my mum to a really aggressive rare cancer that has taken me and my family on an emotional roller coaster that we didn’t want to get on,” the son shared on Facebook.
“My mum died just 29 days after being diagnosed. She displayed not a lot of symptoms. I wrote this post for her, it outlines how she accepted her cancer and her acceptance of death in such a short period of time.
“Give it a read, it will raise your awareness of this type of cancer and if it fills your heart then share it to raise awareness of it… thanks”
According to Kevin, his mom “was out celebrating her sister’s 50th birthday” and appeared perfectly fine just one month before passing away.
“They went out and had some food and drinks. She looked amazing. They had a really good time,” the young man explained.
Sadly, only three days later, the doctors have hit the family with devastating news. “The speed at which it all happened was like a rollercoaster,” Kevin recalled. “I’ve never seen anything like it in my life.”
“The nurses were the loveliest ladies I’ve ever met,” the 30-year-old added, speaking of his mother’s final days. “They would let us get some sleep and said they’d wake us if they needed us.”
Despite having the grim news to deal with, Carol wasn’t going to leave until she had planned a birthday gift for her son’s fast-approaching 30th birthday.
“With the help of my sister and my partner, she’d [organized] for me to receive a giant box of presents,” Kevin expressed. “Including a bottle of the perfume, she’d always given me for Christmas. It was so thoughtful.”
Following Carol’s death, Kevin and his family have been trying their best to deal with the tragic loss.
“Losing Mum has made me [realize] that life is short. She taught us to be resilient and now, more than ever, I feel that” Kevin added.
