88-year-old Bob Nill has been killed while saving two children from a distracted driver.
The school crossing guard, known as Mr. Bob, passed away when a vehicle crashed into him while he was protecting two young boys on the crossing in front of a school in Kansas.
The car hit into Mr. Bob as he saved two young boys, aged 7 and 11, pushing them out of the black sedan’s path, according to officials.
A Coast Guard veteran, Mr. Bob was rushed to hospital where he passed away of his injuries. The unnamed driver was also taken to hospital.
Distressed community members shared how motorists would always speed in the area around the school.
One resident named Tanya Walker said to ABC7 that her ‘heart just dropped’ when she learned about what had happened.
Walker and Nill had previously talked about their concerns that drivers were driving too fast. “We used to talk about how the cars would come up fast,” she expressed.
Mr. Bob’s heartbroken nephew, Randy Nill, said the hero had worked the crosswalk for 5 years as he did not want to just sit around in retirement.
In an interview with ABC7, he said: “This was something I think he felt like he could help children and help himself feel good about what he was doing.
“What my Uncle Bob did for just getting little kids across the street seemed probably trivial to some people, but for him, it was a really important job, and now, we really know how important it was. He maybe saved some lives.”
Theprincipal of Christ the King Parish School, Cathy Fithian, said to KMBC that Mr.
Boll loved working with the children.
“He loved the children. The children loved him. They called him Mr. Bob,” she shared. “On Friday, when he went home, he had a lot of Valentines from the kids, gifts and cards, and he just went on and on about the gifts. And his son knew that he loved it here and the kids loved him.
”You are a hero, Mr. Bob! Rest in peace.
