It looks like the Olympics have finally accepted the guidelines for accepting the transgender athletes without the gender reassignment surgery to compete in the every-four-year sporting mega-event.

The honorable Olympics Committee in November got their hands on the guidelines which were sent from “Consensus Meeting on Sex Reassignment and Hyperandrogenism.”

The confirmation of adopted guidelines are not official yet because there has been no statement released from the Committee but what has created much excitement is the fact that these guidelines are now available on their website.

It’s indeed high time for the International Olympic Committee to do this because other recognized sports organizations have already put such guidelines into action.

ESPN has said that these guidelines will be initiated with inspiration from the NCAA standards. National Collegiate Athletic Association is the United States-based non-profit organization which was founded by Theodore Roosevelt.

Just like in NCAA, the transgender athletes can participate in the games without the surgery of the gender reassignment.

Olympics have been open to transgender athletes to compete in the games but only under specific considerations. The current policies were finalized in 2004 just before the commencement of the Athens Olympics.

The 2004 policies demanded that athletes who are transgender will have a compulsion of undergoing a gender reassignment surgery and will have to recognize themselves of the gender they were legally given at the time of their birth.

Additionally, transgender athletes were also expected to take hormone replacement therapy post the gender reassignment surgery. All these provisions were accepted under the Stockholm Consensus.

The new proposed rules will save the transgender athletes from the pain of going through surgery, but one-year of hormone therapy will be in place.

The chief medical physicist, Joanna Harper was one of the representatives at the Consensus Meeting on Sex Reassignment and Hyperandrogenism. In her opinion, her contribution to the meeting was of extreme importance because she is not only the expert but also a trans.

In her e-mail that she sent to OutSports, she addressed the fact that new proposed rules have the potential of replacing the old and deficient guidelines.

Athletes like Chris Mosier will be able to compete on the biggest platform if new guidelines are put into motion. The athlete qualified for the US Sprint Duathlon team last year. Mosier has not undergone surgery but has been following the hormone therapy guidelines strictly.

Caitlyn Jenner four decades ago won the gold medal in the men’s category but if the new proposed guidelines would have been in place, she would have won in the female category. She was known by the name of Bruce Jenner at the time.
