A gunman opened fire and shot three teens while passing by a Brooklyn basketball court as they were playing basketball.
The incident occurred in the Cypress Hills neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York City, where three teenage boys aged 16, 17, and 18 were playing basketball on Sunday evening.
As seen in the footage released by NYPD, a black SUV with a gunman peeping through its sunroof drove by the court where the teens were playing basketball.
Before fleeing the scene, the gunman managed to shoot three teens, whereas two of them succumbed to their injuries. The 17-year-old survived the ordeal with a shot to the leg and is currently believed to be in a stable condition.
“Yesterday, at approximately 6.40pm, an unknown male opened fire while hanging out of the sunroof of a late model Honda CRV at George Walker Jr. Park,” NYPD chief detective Rodney Harrison confirmed as the police shared the surveillance footage of the shooting.
“The perpetrator struck three people, killing two innocent teenagers playing basketball.”
The deadly shooting occurred as the city continues suffering from a surge of murders and violence.
Besides the two teenagers who were fatally shot while playing basketball, six other murders took place in the Big Apple within a period of 24 hours on Sunday.
Out of the total of eight murders that took place in the city on Sunday, seven victims were victims of gun violence.
According to the reports, shootings in New York City have increased by 176 percent last week, whereas 47 shootings took place last week as compared to 17 during the same time last year.
