FBI experts have spoken out and warned homeowners about potential security risks as they claimed that hackers could be watching your every move through the camera of your smart TV.
With smart TVs on the rise, the FBI has warned people that their gadgets connected to the internet provide a gateway for hackers to access your privacy.
As they claimed, hackers who manage to hack into smart TVs not only gain access to the camera and therefore to what’s going on in your home but also to your router and potentially your other devices such as smartphones and computers.
In order to prevent privacy-breach instances, the FBI suggests you explore your device’s privacy settings instead of relying on default options. In addition, they urged people to cover TV cameras to prevent culprits from seeing the insides of your home if they manage to hack your device.
“Beyond the risk that your TV manufacturer and app developers may be listening and watching you, that television can also be a gateway for hackers to come into your home,” FBI spokesperson warned on the agency’s website.
As the Oregon-based spokesperson continued, “a bad cyber actor may not be able to access your locked-down computer directly” but they could make it through by utilizing your “unsecured TV” to access other gadgets and data on them via your router.
“At the low end of the risk spectrum, they can change channels, play with the volume, and show your kids inappropriate videos. In a worst-case scenario, they can turn on your bedroom TV’s camera and microphone and silently cyberstalk you,” the warning added.
