Stylist Julien Farel revealed if you shampoo your hair every day then it could be doing more damage than good.
He says that there are no strict rules as everyone’s hair is different.
“If you shampoo every day, it will strip your scalp of all its natural oils and can lead to dry, brittle hair,” says Julien Farel who is the founder of Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa in New York.
He recommends washing hair every two to three days. “Only those with an oily scalp should wash every day,” Farel notes. Not sure if you’re “oily”? It should be obvious: Your hair would look like Don Draper’s by 5 o’clock, but not because you’re wearing any pomade. You could scratch your scalp and pull away a film of sebum. Your face is probably oilier than most, too, and flash photography is your personal nightmare. Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
However, you can use conditioner daily as it is like a moisturizer for your hair. It helps keep hair hydrated and protected against potential damage. Farel says conditioner is doubly important if you are growing your hair out. He says that if your hair gets sweaty from working out then you should just simply rinse it with water.
Scott Miller who owns Bauhaus hair salons in the centre of Cardiff says: The majority of people wash their hair every day and it’s probably not dirty.
Washing too much makes it more greasy as you stimulate the sebaceous glands and if you strip them away, they just create more oils. Unless you’ve been working really hard at the gym or have been on a building site and it’s covered in dust – you don’t need to wash your hair every day.”
“There’s a big #nopoo movement at the moment, with people boasting about going weeks without shampooing, but for most of us, cutting out one or two washes will make a big difference.”
