A British hairdresser is giving free haircuts to the homeless while a vet is treating their pets.
British hairdresser Josh Coombes gives free haircuts to homeless as part of his campaign #DoSomethingForNothing while Jade Statt treats their pets.
Josh started the campaign Do Something For Nothing in 2015 when he started going to the streets with his scissors to cut hair for people who needed it.
The hairdresser and Veterinarian Jade Statt work together to raise awareness about people sleeping rough.
Josh said: “Really, the main thing is the conversation. I was talking to homeless people a lot in London and seeing this issue…and the magnitude of it.”
Veterinarian Jade Statt is the director of Street Vet Ltd which provides free services to homeless people’s pets.
Jade and Josh walk the streets with backpacks filled with antibiotics to treat pets and hairdressing equipment.
Josh said: “I’ve found really positive interactions with the public when I am doing this, and it acts as a gateway for people to see what you’re doing, and see what you’re getting up to.”
“For me, I really believe in telling people about it. I really believe in the stories of the people I meet, I think that’s what dissolves the stereotypes and lifts the stigmas that a lot of people have about certain type of issues.”
Josh says what he is doing is not a charity and he is the happiest when he does this.point 176 | While Jade says doing street vet is the most fulfilling part of her career.point 238 | 1
Josh said: “I don’t believe what I am doing is a charity necessarily, it is really about connecting with people. It’s about what you get in return – like I am the happiest I have been doing this and it’s okay to recognise that.”
The pair is currently in New York to provide free haircuts and veterinary care.
