When Haley Moss was three years old, her parents were told by a doctor that she would be lucky to have any friends or hold down a minimum wage job.
But despite her autism, Haley’s mother and father decided that their incredible girl could be anything she wanted to be.
Autism is a condition related to brain development that affects how one perceives and socializes with other people, causing communication and social interaction problems.
Signs of autism in early infancy include lack of response to their name and reduced eye contact. Some children may develop normally for the first few months or years but may become aggressive or withdrawn or lose language skills they have already developed.
Haley’s diagnosis at an early age let her parents get ahead of her condition. They enrolled their girl in an early intervention program where she underwent speech and occupational therapy sessions.
When she was 4, she was placed in a mainstream classroom and she also started to talk.
Haley never gave up. She did her best to make friends throughout her elementary and high school years.
Finally, she graduated with a psychology and criminology degree from the University of Florida, something most people told her she would never accomplish.
While in college, she even wrote two books about living life with autism.
Haley now practices law in Florida where she is an advocate for neurodiversity. As the first lawyer with autism, Haley is an example of what people with the condition can achieve with enough support and determination.
