To celebrate the 10th year anniversary of Meat Free Monday, a non-profit set up by Paul McCartney, Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson, both 62, announced that they’re joining the bandwagon of skipping meat on Mondays.
The couple made the announcement on through a video appearing on Wilson’s Twitter account.
In the video, they said in unison: “Thanks to Paul and Nancy and Stella and many more people who also do Meat Free Mondays.” They also praised the 77-year-old McCartney for getting the ball rolling in 2009 with his organization. The couple also took the time to shout out to McCartney’s wife Nancy and daughter Stella.
Hanks continued: “Doing without meat is good for the planet, and the animals we share it with,” then Wilson chimed in saying it’s good for the health. “It’s nice to do with less meat those who aren’t full-fledged vegans or vegetarians, no meat on Monday, it’s actually a simple and easy thing to do.”
Hanks then shouted, “Let’s do it honey!” to which his wife excitedly replied, “Let’s do it!”
The organization announced during their 10th year anniversary that they are launching #MFMCountMeIn, a worldwide campaign that “aims to bring celebrities, businesses, not-for-profit groups, educational institutions, and individual supporters together, to celebrate what people are doing on the meat-free front and inspire even more people to get on board.”
Apart from Hanks and Wilson, other celebrities have joined in on McCartney’s campaign, including Paul Rudd, Ringo Starr, Orlando Bloom, Alicia Silverstone, and Ellie Goulding.
McCartney said in a statement, “10 years of Meat Free Monday – I can’t believe it! It’s beautiful, and the support we’ve had from all these lovely people –you and all the other lovely people – it’s been great.
It’s a simple idea that people have caught onto.
They love it, we love it, the planet loves it, everybody loves it, the animals love it. It’s Meat Free Monday – happy 10 years!”Meat Free Mondays have worked tirelessly since 2009 with hundreds of universities, schools, businesses, and restaurants. They even published The Meat Free Monday Cookbook and came out with a short documentary entitled, ‘One Day a Week.’
