Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced the name of their baby boy. Taking to Instagram, the royal couple revealed their newborn is called Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
The Duke and the Duchess of Sussex released the name with an adorable photo of the baby meeting the Queen for the first time, in the presence of Prince Philip and Doria Ragland, Meghan’s mother.
It came just hours after the happy couple showed off the new royal baby to the world in Windsor Castle’s St George’s Hall.
The couple’s @SussexRoyal Instagram account broke the news, writing: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are pleased to announce they have named their first born child: Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
“This afternoon Their Royal Highnesses introduced Her Majesty The Queen to her eighth great-grandchild at Windsor Castle.
“The Duke of Edinburgh and The Duchess’ mother were also present for this special occasion.”
The couple has decided not to give their son a Royal title. Instead of being known by one of Duke of Sussex’s lesser titles, the Earl of Dumbarton, Archie will be known as a ‘Master’.
It is undoubtedly a signal that Harry and Meghan want their little boy to be a ‘private citizen’.
The reason they chose the name is not known yet, with royal sources saying: ‘They may have just liked the name’.
Short for Archibald, Archie is a German word which means “genuine”, “brave”, and “bold”. While Harrison is a tribute to the prince, as it means “son of Harry”.
Many royal fans are surprised by the couple’s choice of name, with some being disappointed to see they hadn’t paid any tribute to Princess Diana.
“I wish one of the royal babies would be named Spencer. I’m not a fan of Archie…but I do like Harrison,” one person wrote on Twitter.
Another user wrote in agreement: “I think Archie’s quite a cute name, though I was expecting a Spencer chucked in there somewhere.”
A third added: “Archie. Meh. I was hoping for a Spencer.”
Harry and Meghan appeared to be tired as they showcased little Archie, who is seventh in line to the throne, to the world at Windsor Castle.
A beaming Meghan said at the moment: “I have the best two guys in the world.”
The couple kept it a low key announcement, with just one reporter, one photographer, and three cameras at St George’s Hall.
The baby boy was wrapped in a traditional merino wool blanket from GH Hurt & Son.
37-year-old Meghan said while keeping a watchful eye over the baby: “It’s magic. It’s pretty amazing. I have the best two guys in the world, so I’m really happy.”
The new mom added that the two-day-old baby had the “sweetest temperament”, with the duke interjecting: “I don’t know who he gets that from!”
