A royal expert has claimed that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will face difficulties while paying for their security amid the coronavirus crisis.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex officially stepped down from their roles as senior members of the royal family on March 31.
They have moved to California in March with their son Archie and now paying their estimated £4million security bill by themselves. The royal expert Omid Scobie who is a regular contributor to Vanity Fair and Harper’s Bazaar said the couple will have a very tough time while paying for their security as they currently have no commercial opportunities due to the pandemic.
He said: ”They have spent the last few years not earning a living. As a royal, your expenses are covered but you don’t earn a salary. It will be very tough for them especially in the few months ahead.”
”No-one knows when there is an end date to this. This could follow us for some time. For Harry and Meghan, on top of the difficulties they have had with the press, there has been this underlying issue of who pays for security moving forward.”
”It is something the couple were very conscious of – that from March 31st it would have to be done by themselves. They didn’t want to leave themselves open to further attacks.”
CTV’s Laney Lui said that it is not easy to pay for security adding, ”Security is not cheap. For them, you are dealing with multiple personnel and round-the-clock at that. You have to also account for that and travel and other expenses.”
”This all goes back to the curiosity about their future plans and what they will be. They are going to have to have a pretty significant income to cover that and their lifestyle.”
The Duke and Duchess’ security issue first raised when President Donal Trump announced the United States will not pay for the couple’s security protection. He tweeted, “I am a great friend and admirer of the Queen & the United Kingdom.’’
“It was reported that Harry and Meghan, who left the Kingdom, would reside permanently in Canada. Now they have left Canada for the U.S. however, the U.S. will not pay for their security protection. They must pay!”
To which a spokesperson of Harry and Meghan explained that the couple has already made arrangements for the security explaining, “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have no plans to ask the US government for security resources. Privately funded security arrangements have been made.”
A source also said that the Duke and Duchess will not receive any public money but only funding from Prince Charles’s personal possessions. ”The Prince of Wales supports them privately but the duke and duchess also have their own money. They are paying for this themselves. The duke has been adamant on that.” claimed the source.
